"401(k) Perspective:  A Review of the Past and a Vision for the Future"

The San Francisco Chapter of the Western Pension and Benefits Council is excited to welcome Ted Benna as our initial speaker for our 2012-13 program year. Mr. Benna is widely recognized as the “father of the 401(k) plan”. Ted created and gained IRS approval of the first 401(k) Plan back in 1981. The rest, as they say, is history.

Mr. Benna will share his perspective on today’s 401(k) landscape. These plans have come to dominate the retirement plan marketplace and Ted has some perspective on the growth of this retirement vehicle. In addition, he will share his vision on the future for the 401(k) Plan.

Mr. Benna is currently the President of Malvern Benefits Corporation. A nationally recognized expert on retirement issues, Ted's articles and comments have appeared in a myriad of publications. Ted has also been profiled in the New York Times, Institutional Investors, Pension & Investments, USA Today, Employee Benefit News, Human Resource Executive, Fortune, Plan Sponsor, Kiplinger's, and many other publications. He has written four books, the latest of which is 401(k) for Dummies.

He has received many citations for his accomplishments, including:
  • 2001 National Jefferson Award recipient for Greatest Public Service by a Private Citizen
  • 2001 Player of the Year selected by Defined Contribution News
  • One of eight individuals selected by Money Magazine for its special 20th Anniversary Issue Hall of Fame
  • Selected by Business Insurance as one of the four People of the Century
  • One of ten selected by Mutual Fund Market News for its special 10th Anniversary Issue, Legends in Our Own Time
  • 2005 Lifetime Achievement Award by Defined Contribution News
As a special treat, a photographer will accompany Mr. Benna and will be available to take your picture with Ted following the presentation.

Moderating the session will be Steve Kjar from Lockton. Steve is the Chair of our Program Committee for the 2012-13 year.

Social Hour: Plan to stay for the social hour immediately following the program - discuss issues raised during the program, catch up with old friends and make some new ones.
